The cake is a lie

Gentoo, Rockband, Code, and Music

Today, you’ll get to hear about what I’ve been up to! This wont be on the exam.

  • After a year and a half stint with Ubuntu, I’m back to my true love Gentoo. That is, with a shiny matte new quad core beast of a machine.
  • Bought Rockband for my PS3 couple of weeks ago. Drums are ridiculously hard. Been rocking out. Good fun is being had by all those who dare rock. Can’t wait for Still Alive to be released for free. It shall be a triumph!
  • What started out as pretty code is now a bonafide open source Python module: workerpool. People are using it. No, really.
  • muxtape.com: A super simple music sharing web app launched last week. Its been enriching my life — doing what Pandora once did. Here’s my muxtape. Be right back, there’s someone at the door.

Yes, the drums in Rock Band are really really hard. The game is fantastic though!

Once you’ve fallen in love with Gentoo, you will come back to it every time you try to leave… ;)

@Ben: Indeed! Although the quad cores don’t hurt. :P

I’ve been using ThreadPool (http://chrisarndt.de/en/software/python/threadpool/) myself for a while, although I have no idea what the license is and I haven’t been able to get in touch with the author.

@Dmitri: I’ve stumbled on that one too while I was building my own library, but I found the code to not be sufficiently extendable. I built my implementation intentionally to have clean code and to be very extendable. You can make your own thread pools, your own workers, your own jobs, and plug them very easily. Mine is under the MIT license if you’re interested.

The author of threadpool, Chris Arndt, is one of the TurboGears developers. He hangs out on #turbogears @ freenode, under the name strogon14. I’m sure you could get in touch with him there.
